BLOG: Book Clubs, Anyone?
Hello, Readers! I was reading a book on publishing recently, and one point came up--BOOK CLUBS. This past year, I have spoken at numerous Book Clubs, and it's one of the most entertaining ways I'm able to share my work. And the club members seem to have a great time, too. There are usually seasonal snacks, plenty of engaging conversation, and even sometimes a glass or two of vino.
So why Book Clubs? There are reasons these social hubs are great for readers. Here are some reasons I researched. And some of them surprised me!
*Book Clubs reduce stress: Plot and character discussions can take your mind off of the day's pressures.
*Active social reading and interaction help keep minds sharp, especially as we age.
*Interacting in a "club environment" forces you to try other genres: Well, we all know I'm a historical fiction girl, but trying other genres is healthy reading--forcing you out of your literary "comfort zone."
*One's knowledge is increased by hearing others' views. It often serves to make the story you've read even richer.
*Plot discussions help develop stronger critical thinking skills.
*You'll make new friends who share your love of reading.
*Book Clubs are empathy builders when you're exposed to other people with differing views.
*Members will experience new cultures, beliefs, and travel through the books they read together.
Book Clubs help me as an author, too.
*Sometimes I make sales. Not always, but once in awhile--espeicially during the Holidays!
*My backlisted books can often catch the eye of Book Club members. If they liked my first book, they may want to buy the second.
*Word-of-mouth recommendations of my books between members and their friends help spread the word about my titles.
*Occasionally, Book Club members will review my novels online, which boosts my Amazon rating. (Please do this when you read an author's book!)
*Whenever I interact with a Book Club online OR in person, members are likely to champion my work, which is sooooo appreciated.
*As I hear peoples' questions and their comments about my novels, it enlightens me as to what people like, dislike, or find fascinating about what I write.
